IrishJobs.ie was delighted to help celebrate The Trinity Centre for People with Intellectual Disabilities (TCPID) third annual ‘SciFest@TCPID supported by Abbott’ exhibition and award ceremony.

The event which was held in the Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin showcased an exciting array of investigative science and technology projects, researched and curated by TCPID students.

Now in its third year, the programme is bigger and better than ever. Ten students were encouraged to choose a science project relating to a topic that they are interested in and with the help of mentors from Abbott, took their project idea from start to completion, over 5 weeks.

This students involved in this year’s programme include Barry Olwill, Dale Blount, Benog Brady Bates, Liam Cummins, Kai Tiernan, Julie O’ Brien, Heather Marshall,   Sadbh Feehan, Sinead Sharkey O’Keeffe and Aoife Cleary.

Project topics to be showcased will include Julie’s ‘Super Trooper’ project which tested whether people preferred a selection of ABBA songs in their original or cover version format and Liam’s ‘SciFest United’ project which explored the best striking distance to score a goal in soccer.

TCPID Student, Kai Tiernan, whose project examined the impact of music on wellbeing said Music is my life and my best friend. It always keeps me company. I really enjoyed doing a SciFest project with my mentors. I’m really grateful and thankful that we got help from Dave (Dave McPhillips from The Coronas). At the start, the SciFest project work was quite hard but it got easy then.”

Through the programme students have come up with ideas, developed their projects and grown in confidence says TCPID Pathways Coordinator, Marie Devitt.

“This exhibition is a celebration of their work and a chance for them to present their projects to a large audience. The SciFest@TCPID programme shows in a small way what is possible when people are given the opportunity to fulfil their true potential.”
