Every job hunt should start with one question – What do I want from my next job?
The answer can sometimes be a hard one to come to, but in the end it needs to be all about you – how you like to work, what motivates you, what you will achieve, what type or work environment suits you.
With many industries hiring consistently over recent months, our jobseekers tell us that there is less to fear about getting back into the job market and to start looking for new opportunities
However things have changed since 2010 and the workplace with it. Gone are the days where all you need are the prescribed qualifications and experience.
Companies are now increasingly aware of the power of their own internal culture and want to see it reflected in the candidates applying for their roles. A cohesive team that all work with the same goals and ethos is more desirable than someone who just looks good on paper. It’s about walking the walk and not just having the gift of the gab.
Play to your strengths – we’re all different and it’s important to be honest to yourself about what drives you to succeed and what will just drive you crazy. Some people relish the thought of lots of travel and constantly changing role. For others is might be akin to hell on earth. They might flourish in an environment that provides consistency and the ability to build from a solid foundation.
We also need to be practical about what we can offer a company while balancing our lives and other responsibilities. 9 out of 10 Irish workers surveyed last year told us that a good work life balance would attract them to a new job more than simply getting a pay increase. If this is you, then knowing a company inside and out will prevent you from investing your career time in a job where you’re expected to be on call 24/7.
