Name: Dave Barrett

What is your role at capSpire?

I am a software consultant, who has the good fortune of providing on-site support to a Scandinavian client.

Describe your typical working Day?

Our client utilises a commodities trading and risk management system at the very core of their business, which I provide technical assistance for. In a day I will often:

  • educate users on the application
  • troubleshoot the issues they uncover
  • develop C# code to enhance the system
  • write SQL queries to produce reports

What qualifications do you have/what is your previous work experience?

I came to capSpire as a keen, young Bachelor of Science having completed Business Information Systems at University College Cork. The mix of commerce subjects and computer science granted me a diversified skill set, well-suited to the many facets of my client's organisation.

What is the best about your job?

All the hats I get to wear - support, system administration, software development, database administration - keeps me aligned with my jack-of-all-trades degree.  And, of course, the regular travel has its perks too (see: my burgeoning snowboarding career).

What other skills do you need in your job?

This is largely a customer-facing role. You could find yourself heading to the continent from early on in your capSpire career to represent the company. Confidence and a good way with people will take you far.

What advice would you give someone considering applying for a job at capSpire?

The 3 biggest things you should ask yourself:

  • Are you a decent self-starter?
  • Are you good with people?
  • Are you comfortable with travel?

If you can self-motivate morning-to-night, charm the pants off your peers, and get jazzed by the idea of jet-setting, then you should consider a career with us here at capSpire.

capSpire reviews

capSpire: great software dev opportunities in a fast changing industry.

Anonymous in Cork, Ireland
current employee in Dec 2017

The Best Bits

The people/culture. The people genuinely care about delivering quality services/products/software to clients and as a result I find it is an enjoyable and challenging environment to work in.

Things to improve

It's a reasonably new company, so perhaps the knowledge sharing could be done in a more formal setting. Saying that, there are company training days designed to address this challenge.

The Best Bits

A particularly generous company that gives its employees a great deal of responsibility and freedom.

Things to improve

There could be more training, but that continues to improve.

Things to improve

As a consultant, we are on site with various clients, so it's difficult to identify an area that can be improved.
