Post-Primary Languages Initiative

The role of the Post-Primary Languages Initiative (PPLI) which is a project of the Department of Education and Skills is to diversify, expand, and enhance the teaching and learning of foreign languages in schools.  Current work includes:

  • Audit of foreign languages provision in schools
  • Support for curriculum and assessment reform relating to foreign languages education at post-primary level
  • Support for the lesser taught languages, e.g through employment and allocation of peripatetic teachers to schools on an ex-quota basis, provision of resources to support quality teaching and learning; delivery of CPD to teachers, and liaising with embassies and cultural services
  • Facilitating the development, introduction and implementation of more foreign and heritage languages into the curriculum via new short courses for Junior Cycle
  • Conducting applied research that informs and supports policy and its delivery
  • Collaborating with and facilitating dissemination of work done to promote excellence in language education in the Council of Europe and the European Centre of Modern Languages
  • Promotion of multilingualism and support for plurilingualism
