Established in 1826, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital is a voluntary university-teaching hospital with national, regional and area responsibilities for ensuring the optimal health of mothers, women and infants (up to 10,000 pregnant women pa). The hospital is the largest provider of women and infants' healthcare in Ireland and one of the busiest in Europe. It is a recognised centre of excellence for tertiary services, providing tertiary maternal and fetal medicine services with immediate access at regional and national levels for in-utero transfers in both the maternal and fetal interest.
As a university-teaching hospital, we have a substantial academic portfolio in terms of Medical and Midwifery/Nursing education, training and research. The Hospital hosts two university Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. It is also aligned with the School of Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin for undergraduate and postgraduate Midwifery studies and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, for postgraduate studies in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing. The Centre for Midwifery Education in the Greater Dublin area is hosted on the campus.
In addition, the Hospital hosts an internationally renowned Molecular Medicine Research Laboratory, the National Cervical Cytology Training Centre and the University College Dublin Centre for Human Reproduction.
