The Abbott Diagnostics facility in Longford spans 135,000 square feet and is located on a 20 acre greenfield site in Lisnamuck on the outskirts of Longford town. The Health and Safety of our employees and the protection of the Environment is paramount.  We won the Abbott Global Environment Health & Safety & Energy Plant of the Year Award in 2009, 2011 and 2013 while finishing as runner–up in 2007, 2008 and 2010. We are a zero landfill site and are certified in Environmental Management System ISO 14001 and Occupational Health and Safety Management System 18001. We currently have over 3,000 lost time accident free days.  We have had a 21% decrease in energy usage in the last four years while increasing production output by 68%.  

History

Abbott established the first diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents.

In 2004, Abbott Diagnostics operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004.

Manufacturing commenced in March of the following year and the first product (Architect TSH) was launched in December of 2005.

The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

Products Supported

Diagnostics are concerned with the early and accurate detection of a medical condition which can lead to effective medical treatment. Diagnostic tests are performed in:

  • Hospitals

  • Reference Laboratories

  • Blood Banks

  • Physician’s Offices

  • Nursing Homes

  • Domestic Homes

Abbott Diagnostics in Longford manufactures a total of 18 diagnostic reagent products for Thyroid Function, Fertility and Pregnancy, Cardiology, Renal and Metabolic.  Our products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and are regulated by bodies such as, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).  Our Quality Policy is “To improve health care by providing high quality, safe and effective diagnostic products”. 

The assays that are manufactured at the site are used on our ARCHITECT instrument platform

About The Job

Day to day you would be performing developmental stability and design verification testing, review protocols, writing reports and instrument maintenance. Every day is different however, with new challenges arising constantly.
