Special Olympics Ireland was established in 1978 and is the all island sports training and competition programme for people with a learning disability. The mission of Special Olympics Ireland is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports, for children and adults with a learning disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Currently Special Olympics Ireland provides training and competition opportunities in eleven summer sports and one winter sport. 11,000 athletes, 18,000 volunteers, 402 affiliated groups and 100 community networks are registered with

    Special Olympics Ireland.
