OpenHydro

OpenHydro

OpenHydro Group Ltd. is an Irish energy technology company whose business is the design and manufacture of marine turbines for generating renewable energy from tidal streams. The company’s vision is to deploy arrays of tidal turbines under the world's oceans, silently and invisibly generating electricity at no cost to the environment.

OpenHydro’s technology is one of the first to reach the development stage of permanent deployment at sea. In May 2008 the company connected its EMEC research structure to the electricity distribution network and became the first company in the UK to generate tidal stream power onto the National Grid. In 2008 OpenHydro deployed its first subsea unit at EMEC using OpenHydro’s custom built heavy lift barge, the OpenHydro Installer. Using this methodology, a difficult and lengthy project of many months was transformed into a quick, cost-efficient and repeatable operation

Future turbines will be installed using this approach which will allow turbines to be situated directly on the seabed with no part of the structure visible above the surface and deep enough so as not to pose a hazard to shipping. In November 2009 OpenHydro deployed its first 1MW, commercial scale turbine in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in a project developed in partnership with Nova Scotia Power.

OpenHydro is currently developing projects in Europe with the French utility, EDF off the Brittany coast and in Alderney in the Channel Islands, as well as another project in North America, in the Puget Sound, Washington State with the Snohomish County Public Utility District.

In 2009 OpenHydro was awarded the Engineer’s Ireland Innovative Company Award, as well as the Irish Times Leadership Group Renewable Energy Award and the Company Pioneer Award at Energy Ocean 2009.

I like working for OpenHydro because of the huge variety in the work. I both get to get my feet wet and hands dirty, as well as working in a very stimulating and dynamic office environment.
Nick Murphy, Project Development Manager
One of the most important things to me when assessing a job prospect is the ability of the employer to demonstrate mutual respect between them and their employees. During the recruitment process this was clearly evident, and more so since I began working at OpenHydro, they value their staff as their most important assets.
Darren Hayes, Senior Project Engineer
I have worked in electrical engineering and renewable energy R&D for many years and could now retire and sit back. However, working with the Open Hydro team to develop and commercialise this new technology is the most exciting and promising project I have ever taken part in so I am reluctant to retire so long as I can make a contribution. I am proud to be associated with this group of high-calibre engineers who are a pleasure to work with.
Professor Ed Spooner, Electrical Engineer
OpenHydro supported my return to part time third level education. It was a challenge at times juggling work and lectures, but my role within the company and the experience I gained within my job were highly relevant to my studies and helped me to focus. Now I can say I have a degree in my back pocket that will always stand to me. Something I genuinely dont think I would have achieved with the same level of ease had I not been working for this company.
Sinead Martin, Office Manager
As a recent engineering graduate, OpenHydro presented me with a fantastic opportunity for professional growth in a cutting edge area of engineering that few other companies can offer. They have an excellent attitude towards CPD which fresh graduates will find particularly valuable. Any new employee can expect to be welcomed into a hugely friendly and supportive work environment where unique challenges are met and dealt with on a daily basis.
Ronan Conron, Graduate Project Engineer
