HR Tip

Lisa Stocks, HR manager

Candidates should try to keep CVs to 2 pages and keep it concise. Try to include key achievements when detailing experience rather than just a list of responsibilities. Candidates should also ensure that any “gaps” in their experience are accounted for on the CV so that recruiters are clear about your career history rather than trying to work it out for themselves. Finally, make sure there are no spelling errors, different fonts or formatting - your CV will formulate a recruiter’s initial impression of you.

Name: Simon Carbery
Role: Manager - Audit team

BDO Careers – Simon Carbery
  1. What is your position at BDO?
I am a Manager in one of the BDO Audit Teams. I work under an Audit Partner and Audit Director with currently 20 people on our team (and a few more due in shortly when the new graduates join us). The teams are an ideal size, allowing both plenty of partner and senior management interaction from an early stage as well as significant enough work for every to allow learning right from the outset.
  2. How long have you worked with BDO?
I'm with BDO over 7 years. I joined in October 2007 having completed my degree in National College of Ireland (NCI). I studied for my ACA professional exams over the next 2 years and was finished the exams in 2009. I completed my 3.5 year training contract in March 2011. I continued with BDO post qualification and was promoted to Supervisor in June 2011, Assistant Manager in June 2012 and subsequently Manager in 2014.
  3. What do you enjoy most about your role?

The teams are pretty small. This enables more interaction between all levels of the team from juniors to partner. Building on these relationships is both enjoyable and productive.

I manage a large portfolio of clients in a diversity of sectors such as IT, logistics, retail, construction, professional services and a number of charitable organisations. One day I could be working on a construction company, the next a car dealership the next a multinational IT company. The change in sectors keeps the job interesting.

At BDO there is an emphasis on building up strong relationships with clients and over the years I have enjoy this building of relationships. I like to spend time with my clients getting to know and understand their business and become their trusted business advisor. When this is achieved then that is where you can really be the most help to them.

  4. And what is the most challenging aspect of the job?
The most challenging aspect of my job is probably juggling a number of assignments at once, all at different stages, while also trying to manage the high expectations of the client and also my own audit partner. There are a number of deadlines which need to be achieved week on week and achieving these can be tiring, but it is also rewarding.
  5. How would you describe the BDO work culture?
There is no doubt that people in BDO work hard, but they also know how to enjoy themselves, something which BDO actively encourages. There is a huge emphasis on work place camaraderie. There is a sports & social committee which organises certain events throughout the year including tag rugby, football, yoga and nights out when people pass their exams, comedy nights, numerous Christmas parties, team dinners and lunches, and then other events such as treasure hunts around the city, sailing, paintballing, team building days out etc.
  6. What advice would you give to somebody applying for a job with BDO?
If you have made it to the interview stage it means that you likely have the qualifications and the right credentials. What sets people apart are those who have prepared for the interview, understand the BDO ethos way of striving for excellence in client service, what the potential role in audit (or any other job) will involve and crucially, that you can try show off a bit of your personality.
