WIT, Pharmaceutical & Molecular Biotechnology Reseach Centre, Technical Officer, 2 year contract, salary, up to €40,000

 

Job Title:                               Technical Officer

Employer:                             Waterford Institute of Technology

Commencement Date:          Immediately

Contract:                              2 year fixed term contract, full time (subject to 1 year probationary period)

Salary:                                   Up to €40,000 (depending on the experience and qualifications of the candidate)

Minimum Qualification Required: BSc (honours) in Chemistry or related discipline

Major Duties:

1.     To provide technical assistance to the Wales Ireland Network for Scientific Skills (WINSS) project www.winss.org

Project Background: The Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) at WIT and the Department of Chemistry at Bangor University secured funding under the Ireland Wales 2007-2013 INTERREG IVA programme to establish a scientific skills network in the cross-border region.

WINSS Project Duties:

  • Supporting the day-to-day running of research projects
  • Assisting the Project Manager in the organisation of training programmes/workshops
  • Updating the WINSS website
  • Recording and maintaining laboratory notebooks and quality records associated with equipment
    use and chemicals consumed
  • General housekeeping of the laboratory environment including inventory, waste management, glassware etc.
  • Maintenance and calibration of key pieces of analytical equipment, including the writing and revision of
    SOPs
  • Safety and good laboratory practice within the laboratory environment
  • Liaising with Technical Officers within the Chemical & Life Sciences Department
  • Other duties as assigned

2.      To provide technical assistance for industry related projects within the PMBRC

Duties:

  • To conduct contract research and analysis for client companies of the PMBRC and to summarise results in technical reports.
  • To assist industry and academic research projects taking place in the PMBRC.

3.      To coordinate the HIPODERM project (High Potency Dermatologicals)

Project Background: A PMBRC-led consortium has been awarded substantial funding to help develop technologies for
delivering highly potent drugs across the skin. The project, called HIPODERM (High Potency Dermatologicals), includes Waterford-based EirGen Pharma Ltd., Cardiff University and An-eX Analytical Services Ltd., also based in Cardiff.

HIPODERM Project Duties:

  • Liaising with project partners
  • Coordinating the activities of the project
  • Arranging quarterly meetings
  • Compiling annual progress reports

The essential and desirable attributes for a member of staff in this position include:

Academic Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc (honours) in Chemistry or related discipline

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree in a science related discipline

Experience

Essential

  • 3 years relevant post degree laboratory based experience
  • Equipment maintenance and validation

Desirable

  • Project coordination
  • Training coordination
  • Liaison with funding agencies

Specific knowledge and skills

Knowledge of some or all of the following scientific techniques:

  • Spectroscopic techniques
  • Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry
  • Microscopy
  • Thermal Analysis
  • Drug Product Formulation
  • Surface & Particle Size Analysis

  • Excellent writing skills
  • MS Office

Other

Essential

  • Excellent communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong problem solving skills.
