The role: Structured Data Analyst / Taxonomist

At Google, data drives all of our decision-making. Quantitative Analysts work all across the organization to help shape Google's business and technical strategies by processing, analyzing and interpreting huge data sets. Using analytical rigor and statistical methods, you mine through data to identify opportunities for Google and our clients to operate more efficiently, from enhancing advertising efficacy to network infrastructure optimization to studying user behavior. As an analyst, you do more than just crunch the numbers. You work with Engineers, Product Managers, Sales Associates and Marketing teams to adjust Google's practices according to your findings. Identifying the problem is only half the job; you also figure out the solution.

You will support software engineers, product managers and computational linguists in evolving and enriching large data sets through the use of both human annotators and automated machine learning approaches, with the objective of improving and maturing the statistical classification technologies that are central to Google???s targeted advertising systems. Googlers in the Structured Data Analyst/Taxonomist specialization are creative and analytical individuals who possess the ability to work in a cross-functional role that interfaces broadly with sales, product, engineering and operations in agile project management scenarios.

Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train and supervise multilingual human annotators in the production of high-quality structured data to inform intelligent systems that attempt to understand web content and users of Google???s products.
  • Use your strong understanding of current online advertising, marketing practices, and industry and market research to guide classifier model design and feature engineering in a dynamic software development environment, working collaboratively with engineers and project managers.
  • Develop, expand and maintain various application-oriented taxonomies used to characterize and organize web content, business inventories and user interests and behaviors, all while exhibiting a pragmatic, flexible and hands-on approach at data modeling and analysis toward the goal of automated understanding of natural language and user behaviors.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Experience in developing and evaluating taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, classification standards and metadata schemas, esp. in e-commerce, B2B enterprise, or SEM/SEO contexts.
  • Experience with data modeling and analysis. Comfort with manipulating large data sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform market and industry analysis, master technical standards and learn specialized vocabularies in unfamiliar subject domains.
  • Ability to direct the work of a temporary rater workforce, produce clear guidelines for data collection and annotation, in order to produce quality data in time-sensitive contexts.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in an analytical data-driven field (e.g., statistics, linguistics, library science).
  • Industry experience in a software or product development environment. Experience working on the technical side of an ad agency or in an SEM/SEO setting.
  • Experience in helping to shape new products, iterating quickly, thinking creatively, and identifying what has promise, and what's a dead end.
  • Scripting (Python/Perl/Bash) and SQL proficiency.
  • Familiarity with basic principles of statistical machine learning and text classification.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, and ability to work in a multilingual setting.
