Job Title: Staff Nurse, Adolescent Unit (fixed term) 

Reporting to: Clinical Nurse Manager.

Place of Work: Willow Grove Adolescent Unit, St. Patrick’s University Hospital, James’s Street, Dublin 8,

Incorporating St Edmundsbury Hospital, Lucan, the Dean Clinics and other services operated by St. Patrick’s University Hospital  

Main Purpose:  To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team within the context of a 14 bedded Adolescent Inpatient Unit. There will also be a requirement for the post holder to work in both in-patient and outpatient settings. The post-holder will have responsibility for the assessment of young people’s care needs and the development and evaluation of programmes of care for the adolescent cohort.  S/he will be expected to carry out all relevant forms of care in partnership with young people, families/carers and other professionals and in line with agreed standards and clinical policies. The nursing team within the adolescent inpatient unit provides recovery based care within a structured programme based on the Therapeutic Milieu Model.

Hours of Work:  The standard working week applying to the post is 37.5 hours, worked on a rotating shift basis. 


• Function as a Named Key Nurse, within a multi-disciplinary team to a defined group of young people within the overall unit complement.

• Participation in the comprehensive assessment of young people who present to the adolescent unit in collaboration with the young person, their family and the multi-disciplinary team.

• Plan and implement appropriate recovery oriented care plans for each young person that are evidence based and /incorporate best practice guidelines.

• Provide nursing care based on ongoing assessment of a young person’s daily functioning, identified needs and goals and which takes cognisance of a young persons’ strengths.

• Collaborate with each young person/family on the development of recovery oriented goals and ongoing progress of their care plan.

• Assist the young person/family to work towards goals identified in the care plan by developing positive therapeutic relationships with them and working within a participative framework which recognises the principles of equity, dignity and respect and which takes into account spiritual and cultural diversity.

• Plan, facilitate and evaluate appropriate nursing interventions in the context of the key working role which assist the young person to achieve the goals identified in their care plan.

• Contribute to the ongoing care of the young person by actively participating in multi-disciplinary team care plan review meetings, core team meetings, daily handovers, discharge planning and family meetings.

• Complete written records in line with hospital policy, ensuring relevant clinical information is documented accurately and legibly.

• Attend and contribute to the working of  both the nursing team and the multidisciplinary team by attending and participating in staff nurses meetings, business meetings and reflective meetings in a proactive manner.

• Promote collegiality and team working through respectful communication, approachability, respect for other people’s opinions and actively work to create a positive work environment.

• Participate in the ongoing development of the unit’s therapeutic programme.

• Plan, implement and evaluate individual, group, family or parenting therapeutic interventions either alone under direct supervision or jointly with another professional.

• Contribute to the maintenance of the Therapeutic Milieu model with a view to empowering young people to realise and maintain their potential in relation to health and wellbeing.
