Abbott Diagnostics Division (ADD) Longford

Abbott established the first diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents.  In 2004, Abbott Diagnostics operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004.  Manufacturing commenced in March of the following year and the first product (Architect TSH) was launched in December of 2005.  The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

We currently have a vacancy for a Site Head of Quality and this role will involve the following:

Primary Function 

  • Leads ADD Longford’s Quality Organisation.
  • Establishes, organises and maintains the AIDD Longford Quality System in order to comply with Division, Corporate and applicable Regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that all customer and compliance requirements are met while maintaining availability of diagnostic products.
  • Ensures continual compliance with the policies relating to personnel, quality, engineering, safety and finance. 

Major Responsibilities 

  • Conduct business in a manner that will protect human health, safety and the environment by complying with all applicable EHS laws, as well at the Abbott Global and Technical standards.
  • Leads the sub-departments responsible for Quality Assurance. Quality Engineering (QE)/ Validation, Quality Systems, Centralised Incoming Quality Assurance (CIQA) and Change Control.
  • Informs Site & Division management about quality related issues requiring attention and/or improvement. 
  • Plans and initiates improvements to the quality areas, as needed, to meet changing demands or requirements of the business and regulatory environment.
  • Establishes key priorities for the site regarding quality improvement initiatives and tracks key projects to completion.
  • Develops & manages resource and budget activities associated with quality related activities.
  • Provides for training and development of personnel to ensure skills and experience are appropriate to meet the organization’s responsibilities.
  • Fulfills the role of Management Representative per applicable regulations with authority over and responsibility for a) ensuring the quality system requirements are effectively established and maintained and b) reporting on the performance of the quality system to Management with Executive Responsibility.
  • Communicates effectively throughout site and across sites.
  • Maintain ETMS TO DO LIST.

  • The following level of education provides a necessary foundation for this Job function:
  • Primary degree in an applicable scientific discipline as this experience/level of education provides the necessary foundation for this Job function.
  • Background
  • The following experience provides a necessary foundation for this Job function:
  • o  Five years experience in regulated industry including three years of experience in a position with personnel responsibility as this will provide a good foundation for this job function.
  • o  Excellent communication skills desired. Communicates with co-workers, other departments, and other sites.


  • Informs site management on effectiveness of Quality System and identifies areas for improvement in order to meet current and future expectations of applicable Division, Corporate and Regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and maintains systems for reporting quality metrics and uses the information generated to prioritise and monitor quality improvement projects.
