Irish Life Financial Services is currently the leading Protection provider in the Irish market and the Underwriting Team manage both Retail & Corporate protection applications across Life, Specified Illness and Income Protection.

The Irish Life underwriting team assess protection business across a multi -channel distribution, including Brokerage, Bancassurance and Tied Advisers

Providing quality decisions, fast turn-around and access to underwriters are key components of the excellent service we offer.

To support our growth in protection business and strategic projects, we are looking to recruit an experienced underwriter for a fixed term period of 15 months.  

We have an opportunity at a Senior Underwriting level to work within a dynamic and progressive Underwriting team to further enhance the level of technical expertise available in the area.

The Role:

Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the successful candidate will be required to provide technical expertise and support to the Underwriting team, and they will handle all protection risk and case types within their authority or within reinsurance sign off.

The Senior Underwriter will look to identify ways to improve our underwriting and service standards through continuous improvement. They will also provide training, coaching and feedback to the Underwriting team, and will provide support to a number of key underwriting projects.

The Senior Underwriter will represent the Underwriting team internally and externally at meetings and presentations and would be seen as an exemplar role model in all aspects of work for the team.

 Other Key Aspects of the Role Include:


  • Providing high quality decisions across all case types within agreed authority & reinsurance limits
  • Assessment of complex medical and financial risks, plus management of Large Case risks
  • Proactively sets the quality standards within the team and supports continuous improvement agenda within the Team
  • Working on own initiative and taking a lead role within the team to meet agreed service standards
  • Provides coaching & feedback to the underwriting team & actively supports the team training programme
  • Proactively manages Key Contact(s) to a high standard
  • Supports delivery of key projects and process changes within Underwriting
  • Ability to work successfully  on projects with teams across Customer Service or Reinsurance Companies  to deliver changes to underwriting  or wider CS practises
  • Support the underwriting management team with technical input at internal & external adviser/stakeholder meetings as appropriate
  • Represents Underwriting very professionally as appropriate i.e. Reinsurers, Acc. Managers, Internal Audit, Sales or Training Presentations etc


The Person:

The successful candidate must:

  • Currently be at a Senior Underwriter level.
  • Have a number of years of relevant experience in underwriting Life, SIC & IP.
  • Have attained the Diploma in Life & Disability Underwriting (DLDU)
  • Have strong analytical reasoning and decision making capabilities.
  • Have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the Risk, Control and Regulatory Environment relevant to this role and ensure control mechanisms are in place to prevent any risk arising.

It would be desirable for the successful candidate to:


  • Have strong commercial awareness.
  • Be strongly customer service orientated.
  • Be organised and deliver on any promises made.
  • Have an interest in ongoing developments in relevant medical topics and protection products.
