The Role:

Applications are sought for the position of Senior Research Assistant in the College of Engineering & Built Environment. The post holder will be required to carry out research for the INTRADE (Intelligent Transportation for the Dynamic Environment) InterReg IVB EC Project and collaborate with Dublin Port Company and other international partners (academic and industrial) in the delivery of specific work packages and tasks in relation to optimizing a traffic management system in Dublin Port and reducing environmental impacts.

Nature of the Post:

This is a specified purpose post to work on the "INTRADE" InterReg project.  The contract will run from date of employment until the end of the specified purpose or on an earlier date if the funding for this post comes to an end.

The provisions of the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992 to 2006 and any subsequent Acts replacing or amending these Acts and any orders and regulations made under these Acts will apply.

Key Duties:

 To deliver on work packages and tasks in accordance with the overall INTRADE Programme and tasks assigned to DIT
 To record, analyse and report results of the research
 To prepare and present findings of research activities to other European INTRADE Partners and Dublin Port Company
 To contribute to the drafting and submitting of relevant progress reports to the project coordinator based in Polytechnique de Lille, France
 To work independently on an assigned research tasks in relation to optimizing a traffic management system in Dublin Port and reducing environmental impacts

Requirements:

Please note that if you have a current or previous employment relationship in a non-permanent capacity with the Institute, you will not be deemed eligible to apply for this post.

Essential
 An BSc in Transport Engineering, Maritime Management or equivalent in an appropriate discipline
 Considerable experience in analyzing data, reporting and disseminating research findings
 Working knowledge of research techniques

Desirable
 MPhil or PhD in Transport Engineering, Port Operations or equivalent in an appropriate discipline
 Evidence of familiarity with freight logistics, port operations, shipping and related environmental aspects
 Considerable experience of procedures in the delivery of EU funded projects and InterReg IVB projects in particular
 Experience of working in an academic research environment
 Experience of working in a sea port environment
 Evidence of knowledge and experience with various research methodologies
 Ability to network and present complex information effectively to a range of commercial and academic audiences
 Experience of multi-disciplinary work
 Understanding of EU research programmes including InterReg
 Familiarity with software tools (e.g. ScannerStudio and Flexsim) used for optimizing traffic management
 Competent in the use of MS Office
 Availability to travel nationally and abroad from time to time to INTRADE project meetings
 Effective written and verbal communication skills
 Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team
 Commitment to high quality research
 Ability to work independently and as part of a team
 Ability to take his/her own initiative

Salary:

This post is aligned to the Senior Research Assistant salary scale.  Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale i.e.:

€26,820 per annum (pro-rata)

Hours of work:

A 37 hour week is in operation. Starting and finishing times to be agreed with the Principal Investigator. 

Probation:

A probationary period of 2 month from the date the individual commences work will apply.  The appointee will be advised on his/her performance during the period. At the end of probationary period the appointee may be confirmed in his/her appointment, continued on probation for a further period or at any time during the probationary period the appointment may be terminated.
