Safety Officer  (full-time, fixed-term)

Applicants for the position must have:

• A recognised qualification in Nursing, Medical or an Allied Profession

• A minimum of 5 years post-graduate clinical experience

• A qualification in Health & Safety Management/ related disciplines (or equivalent) or a commitment to undertake a course leading to such qualification

• Experience in safety management

• A management qualification is desirable

• Membership of an appropriate professional body is desirable

JOB DESCRIPTION


Job Title: Safety Officer     (fixed term)

Reporting to: Director of Services

Place of Work: St Patrick’s Hospital, James’s Street, Dublin 8, incorporating St Edmundsbury Hospital, Lucan and any other locations where the Hospital carries out work.

Main Purpose:  To manage/implement the development and operation of the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety Management function.

Hours of Work: The standard working week applying to the post is 35 hours.

          
Duties (Overview):

- To manage/implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management system within the Hospital.

- To review the current status of Occupational Health and Safety Management throughout the Hospital.

- To identify ways and means of improving Occupational  Health and Safety Management systems  in terms of legal compliance and manage/implement these improvements in line with the Hospital’s strategic plan.

- On instruction from Director of Services, to Chair the Safety Committee

To:

- devise and implement safety audits

- develop statistical and qualitative reports on occupational health & safety management trends and patterns

- co-ordinate the implementation of recommendations arising from incident investigations

- ensure that Occupational Health & Safety Management goals and deliverables integrate with the operational and strategic needs of the Hospital

- ensure Occupational Health and Safety Management operate within the Hospital’s quality framework and meet the required standards of the Mental Health Commission, the Health & Safety Authority and other regulatory bodies

- provide timely and relevant feedback and information to the Director of Services

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and/or experience:

- A recognised qualification in Nursing, Medical or an Allied Profession

- A qualification in Health & Safety Management/ related disciplines (or equivalent) or a commitment to undertake a course leading to such qualification

- Experience in the management of safety or related areas

- A management qualification is desirable

- Membership of an appropriate professional body is desirable
