Job Title: Prompt Desk Roles for Power Trading, Gas Management & Analytics
Business Unit: ESB Trading, Generation & Wholesale Markets
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Position Description
ESB Trading is the trading business within ESB Generation and Wholesale Markets which operates within Single Electricity Market (SEM), and the British electricity market, Commodity Markets and interfaces with the Production and Asset Management areas. The Trading group is responsible for developing and implementing innovative trading, settlement and risk management processes which enable the business to respond successfully to the challenges and opportunities of the markets we operate within.
The Prompt Trading team operates on a 24 x 7 shift basis to manage and optimise value from gas and power positions against the generation business assets with gas and power traded through the Irish and GB markets.
From May 2018, the Irish Market is moving to a continuous trading market similar in structure to the GB market. To support ESB Trading preparation for Trading in both the GB and new I-SEM market a number of positions are becoming in the following roles:
  • Power Traders
  • Gas Position Management
Key Responsibilities
It is anticipated that successful candidates will manage asset positions in either/both of the Irish and GB energy markets. In relation to these markets the key responsibilities will include the below:
Power Trader (I-SEM) 24/7 shift role:
  • Analyse market data to generate the Day Ahead Market (DAM) , Intra Day Market (IDM) and Balancing Market (BM) bids on a unit by unit basis
  • Submit Demand Side Unit and I&C bids
  • Execute DAM, IDM Auction and IDM Continuous (Spot) trades
  • Manage and submit bids to the BM
  • Manage ESB's positions in real time to limit exposure to imbalance
  • Optimise plant dispatch to a technically feasible position based on the DAM results and the DAM short term forecast
  • Create and submit initial and final PNs and liaise with Plants to ensure the feasibility of these PNs
  • Manage the execution of the interconnector trading strategies
  • In the case of an unplanned outage, liaise with plants to try to minimise exposure and financial penalties for ESB by making up the capacity through IDM Continuous (Spot) trading or through secondary RO trading (TBC).
  • Managing impact of variable running, plant unavailability & other short term factors on a portfolio basis.
  • Contributing to the development of trading strategies
  • Linking between stations and System Operators to ensure that decisions are taken on a portfolio basis and actively influenced by ESB.
  • Communicating and relationship management with stations, System Operators and other parties throughout the full shift cycle and ensuring that all stakeholders are fully informed and that the commercial interest is optimised.
  • Making timely commercial decisions based on available real time information and informed judgement.
    Gas Position Management
  • Buy and sell gas and gas capacity in I-SEM and GB
  • Manage impact of short term factors on a portfolio basis
  • Liaise with Stations and Gas System Operators
  • Managing impact of variable running, plant unavailability & other short term factors on a portfolio basis.
  • Contributing to the development of trading strategies
  • Linking between stations and System Operators to ensure that decisions are taken on a portfolio basis and actively influenced by ESB.
  • Communicating with stations, System Operators and other parties throughout the full shift cycle and ensuring that all stakeholders are fully informed and that the commercial interest is optimised.
  • Making timely commercial decisions based on available real time information and informed judgement.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
  • Electricity and/or fuel markets and/or
  • Experience in operation/maintenance of generating stations and possess a good level of numerical, IT, analytical and communications skills.
    Desirable
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills

  • Knowledge of GB/SEM/I-SEM markets

  • Meticulous attention to detail and market deadlines
Qualifications
3rd level qualification or relevant work experience is essential
Location
This position will be based in ESB Head Office, East Wall Road, Dublin 3.
General
The successful candidates will be assigned to work in the Prompt Trading Group of ESB Trading Team that is responsible for carrying out appropriate commercial gas and power operations on behalf of Generation and Wholesale Market Business portfolio across SEM/ I-SEM and BETTA markets, and to provide market analytics support to the Prompt desk trading strategy. The successful candidates will develop a keen understanding of the main power and energy markets ESB trades.
Power Traders will initially be appointed to the I-SEM market trading but will also be assigned to the GB trading desk as required.
A flexible trading structure is required this structure will change and adapt to manage the transition from SEM to I-SEM and integration across trading jurisdictions.
It is anticipated that as the I-SEM market demands become clearer that role requirements, structures, shift rosters and staff numbers will change over time, as determined by business needs.
