Project Survey Supervisor – Growing Up in Ireland (GUI)

The Institute The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), founded in 1960, is located in Dublin’s South Docklands area. Its mission is to produce high quality research, relevant to Ireland’s economic and social development, with the aim of contributing to knowledge and informing policymaking and public debate. It has over 120 staff including economists, sociologists, psychologists, support and technical staff.

Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) is the national longitudinal study of children, which has been carried out by the Economic & Social Research Institute and Trinity College since its inception in 2006. It is funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) and is overseen by the DCYA in association with the Central Statistics Office.  It also receives a contribution from The Atlantic Philanthropies.  

The study has been following the progress of almost 20,000 children and young people since 2007.  This has involved carrying out questionnaire surveys with the children and young people in their homes, as well as with their parents/guardians and other main caregivers.  The study is helping to improve our understanding of childhood and adolescence and provides a unique scientific framework for the development of Irish policy in this area.

The ESRI is currently seeking to recruit a suitably qualified individual to cover for the full-time position of ‘Project Survey Supervisor–Growing Up in Ireland (GUI)’. 

Role Description

This is a key position in the operations function of the Growing Up in Ireland project.  The position will report directly to the project’s Survey and Data Manager.

The role has responsibility for the overall management, coordination and supervision of the fieldwork components of the project to ensure that survey interviewing is completed to the highest international quality standards in the most cost-effective and timely manner.  This will involve the supervision - both direct and indirect - of relevant staff (internal field support staff and survey interviewers) and liaising with researchers and other parties, as appropriate to the execution of the project.  Previous experience of managing largescale field surveys is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties will be central to the post:

  • Line management and supervision of internal field support staff and survey interviewers
  • Assisting with the recruitment, assessment and selection of survey interviewers
  • Assisting with the recruitment of internal field support team
  • Co-ordinating and delivering interviewer training
  • Managing survey sample allocation
  • Monitoring the work of survey interviewers and their productivity to ensure that fieldwork is progressing in a timely and professional manner
  • General management of interviewing staff, including their supply and support
  • Ensuring quality control of all interviewing work
  • Maintaining and developing the panel of interviewers
  • Supervising the Data Entry of paper questionnaires and related instruments
  • Managing Garda vetting of field and other staff and their appointment as Officers of Statistics
  • Ensuring best practice in field procedures  Other work responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

Key Criteria

Qualifications, Experience and Skillset The Project Survey Supervisor will have:

  • A relevant third level qualification or equivalent experience
  • A very high level of competence in Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and Access.
  • An appropriate level of post-qualification experience (particularly in a relevant supervisory capacity) to ensure the smooth running of a survey-based project such as Growing Up in Ireland
  • Experience of supervising and working as part of a team and generating a positive sense of team motivation and collaboration
  • Excellent administrative, planning and organisational skills
