Role Purpose
To control and lead projects across both business and IT to successful completion to ensure objectives are delivered to agreed scope, schedule, quality and budget.

Essence of Role – Key Accountabilities
Impact on the business

  • Ensure business objectives are achieved through proactive and diligent management of projects to successful conclusion, including delivering an excellent customer experience
  • Ensure business can base market facing plans with confidence on agreed project outcomes by ensuring accurate and timely communications on project status and challenges.
  • Develop strong close working relationship with Business Owner on each project
  • Update Business Owner on key ‘sign off’ gates, their role within these gates and remind them of upcoming deliverables which they have accountability for
Customers Suppliers and Third Parties
  • Proactive management of IT vendors and third parties on the project to ensure deliverables are on time, as specified and match agreed quality standards
  • Negotiate commercials for each project, including using existing framework arrangements where applicable, focussing primarily on work effort. Engage Solution Architects and other stakeholders as appropriate in this.
  • Manage vendor costs throughout project lifecycle, protecting the overall budget of the project
  • Ensure vendor commitment to deliverables and timelines in overall integrated delivery plan
Leadership and team work
  • Manage cross functional and virtual project teams  - both onsite and offsite
  • Develop resourcing plan for each project, including IT business resources, fulltime part-time resources
  • Work with Business Owner to identify and secure business resources needed to complete business tasks and deliverables
  • Work with IT to identify and secure resources to support the timely completion of all IT tasks and deliverables
  • Work with other project managers and Release management to ensure successful delivery of the overall Release
  • Responsible for the initiation, management and delivery of company projects through full lifecycle and following standard project management and change delivery methodology
  • Drive delivery of projects to ensure project objectives are achieved within the Change Delivery framework and within scope, budget, timeline and quality expectations and through defined governance and gating processes
  • Responsible for managing several projects simultaneously
  • Produce project plan documents identifying the objectives, scope, deliverables, approach, resources and budget for the project.
  • On multi vendor projects ensure that integration testing is planned for up front and included in project timelines and costs.
  • Manage Change Control on projects, ensuring that implications of scope changes are understood and agreed, following formal Change Control and Governance processes
  • Own project commercials, agreeing initial budget and tracking actual costs ensuring no project overruns. This includes managing the creation of purchase orders.
  • Ensure approved funding in place as required throughout project lifecycle
  • Negotiate vendor price proposals, securing inputs from appropriate stakeholders to validate price proposals and ensure value for money
  • Create and maintain Quality Management Plan
  • Ensure customer experience is considered, defined and managed as a deliverable on projects
  • Drive cross functional planning across all parties involved in the project, ensuring all parties aligned to overall project plan. Track and manage this alignment throughout project lifecycle – maintain project plan
  • Ensure sign off on project deliverables in accordance with agreed project schedule
  • Ensure tasks completed in accordance with project schedule and proactively resolve any slippage in plan
  • Agree  project organisation and ensure required resources are assigned in accordance with the project plan
  • Fully understand and rigorously manage project risks and issues, driving successful mitigation, resolution and escalation as required – maintain Risk & Issues Log
  • Manage dependencies across all streams within the project, both business and technology, and across other projects in a release, monitoring overall end state and project objectives – maintain Dependencies Log
  • Produce project closure reports and contribute to lessons learned activities
  • Create and maintain full suite of project documentation

  • Embrace change and continuous improvement initiatives, adopting change to improve performance
  • Suggest improvements to existing approach
Knowledge and experience
  • Ensure Compliance to Organisational Standards
  • Produce weekly status reports to project stakeholders – timely, accurate, relevant and concise
  • Manage successful project meetings through careful planning and follow through  – meetings are regular, start on time with formal agendas, followed up with minutes and actions
  • Produce project briefing material as required (for example to enable resolution of project issue)

Person Specification

Technical / Professional Expertise

  • Significant  project management experience in delivering projects
  • In Telecoms environments
  • With significant IT elements
  • Using multiple vendors in same project
  • Which include in some cases change to business processes
  • Which include in some cases change to underlying hardware infrastructure
  • Thorough and practical understanding of project lifecycle and delivery of cross functional projects
  • Excellent project planning and project management skills
  • Knowledge of industry best practice project management principles
  • Be capable of managing large and complex budgets and timescales
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong vendor management experience
  • Experience of evaluating vendor proposals with excellent negotiation skills
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills
  • Experience of managing cross functional and virtual teams
  • Have a strong focus on delivery with excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Experienced facilitator
  • Creative and innovative approach to issue resolution and conflict management
  • Excellent follow through with a strong sense of urgency plus ability to influence
  • Knowledge of Vodafone business processes and systems an advantage
