The Role:

Hothouse, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at Dublin Institute of Technology, has an immediate opportunity for a Licensing Executive to identify and evaluate Dublin Region Innovation Consortium (DRIC - consisting of DIT, ITT, ITB, IADT and NCI) invention disclosures, and develop and execute commercialization strategies to transfer the Life and Food Science technologies to spin-outs, SMEs and multinationals.

Under general supervision of the Head of Commercialisation, the Licensing Executive, will elicit and evaluate DIT invention disclosures, and develop and execute commercialization strategies to transfer the technologies to spin-outs, SMEs and multinationals.

Nature of the Post:

This is a 5 year fixed purpose contract which will run from date of employment until the end of the fixed purpose or on an earlier date if the funding for this post comes to an end, whichever is the earlier.  The purpose of this post is to provide Licensing Expertise on the Technology Transfer Strengthening Initiative programme. 

The provisions of the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992 to 2006 and any subsequent Acts replacing or amending these Acts and any orders and regulations made under these Acts will apply.


• Work closely with researchers and research students in DIT to enhance understanding of IPR, and encourage and develop commercialisation strategies and opportunities
• Independently evaluate and execute intellectual property strategies for disclosures
• Develop product scenarios for inventions
• Develop market projections for inventions
• Develop commercialization plans for inventions and business plans for spin-outs
• Manage and negotiate multiple types of agreements with industry regarding DIT technologies
• Liaise with Enterprise Ireland with regard to patent and commercialisation funding
• Input information and assist with the maintenance of the database of disclosures, patents, and licenses
• Work closely with the Directorate of Research and Enterprise, as appropriate and as required


• Masters in Business and/or Science
• Five years experience in licensing, sales, or leading a start-up business in Life or Food science
• Ability to negotiate complex legal agreements
• Ability to evaluate market potential for new products – revenue, expense and return on investment analyses
• High level of knowledge of sales and marketing in the area of Life/Food Science and technology developments
• Strong software application skills, including but not limited to: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

• PhD
• Experienced in intellectual property management and the process of moving academic discoveries to the private sector
• Knowledge of web-based information retrieval including INTEUM
• Ability to process multiple projects
• Ability to work closely with academic investigators
• Excellent listening, oral presentation and writing skills


This post is aligned to the Senior Lecturer 2 salary scale (for pay purposes only).  Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale:

€76,407 per annum

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy. 

Hours of work:

A five day 40 hour week is in operation. Starting and finishing times will be as specified by your Manager.


A probationary period of 12 months from the date the individual commences work will apply.  The appointee will be advised on his/her performance during the period. At the end of probationary period the appointee may be confirmed in his/her appointment, continued on probation for a further period or at any time during the probationary period the appointment may be terminated.

Annual leave:

29 days per annum excluding any concession days that may be granted at Christmas and Easter.  Annual leave to be taken within the duration of the contract and as agreed between the Project Director and the individual.  Payment for annual leave and.....
