Abbott Vascular’s manufacturing facility in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary helps meet worldwide demand for vascular devices. A key vascular product which is manufactured in Clonmel is XIENCE - a drug coated stent used to treat coronary artery disease by propping open a narrowed or blocked artery and releasing the medicine in a controlled manner to prevent the artery from becoming blocked again following the stent procedure.

Abbott Vascular is a modern 250,000 square feet facility on a 19-acre site. More that €100 million has been investment in the Clonmel facility in the past four years, making it a centre of excellence in the manufacture of vascular devices.
Key Responsibilities

  • Uses scientific education and/or experiences to generate results in accordance with GMP/procedural requirements and scientific principles.
  • Interprets data output to determine conformance with product specifications.
  • Understands internal business processes to make appropriate prioritization of their assigned work duties.
  • Based upon their GMP/procedural knowledge, recognizes exception events and is able to initiate the exception process to ensure proper remedial action is taken. Is able to recognize laboratory technique or instrumental events that could impact the integrity of the test data.
  • Has basic computer proficiency of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Demonstrates the proficiency to learn Abbott computer systems and computer systems associated with laboratory instrumentation.
  • Works under the general guidance of a supervisor but can effectively manage their own time to ensure timely completion of assigned duties.
  • Understands, implements, and maintains a safe work environment for themselves and others in accordance with procedural requirements.
  • Understands, implements, and maintains GMP with respect to laboratory records, procedures, and systems in accordance with procedural requirements.
  • Understands, implements, and maintains their training certifications as needed for assigned job tasks. Performs analytical test methods as written to support product/material release with minimal error.
  • Understands laboratory techniques and principles performed.
  • Interprets experimental data for conformance with product/material specifications. Initiates appropriate exception documents in accordance with procedural requirements.
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications. Participates and provides input within assigned teams.
  • Independently maintains training and recertification on training modules, safety, GMP, and procedural updates. Accepts responsibility for acquiring knowledge and experience to support continual personal development.
  • Demonstrates logical thought processes in order to determine possible contributors to exception events.
  • Completes assigned routine analytical laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures in a timely manner.
  • Prepares as required, laboratory solutions, reagents and standards in compliance with procedures and laboratory GMP.
  • Completes daily checks on equipment as required e.g. balances and pH meters.
  • Verifies all equipment is appropriately calibrated before use.
  • Clearly and concisely documents all testing activites as required to ensure conformance to laboratory documentation practices and traceability requirements.
  • Evaluates test results for conformance to appropriate specifications and highlights to supervisor any suspect results.
  • Completes all OOS and deviation reports generated to a high standard and in a timely manner.
  • Supports the training activities of other analysts in the laboratory.
  • Updates and revises procedures and laboratory documentation as required.
  • Completes all activities in accordance with the appropriate safety standards and PPE requirements.

    (Technical/Business Knowledge (Job Skills)) has basic knowledge of general technical concepts and practices and a general understanding of product or systems fundamentals in a laboratory environment and will perform this job in a quality system environment.
    Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations.
    (Cognitive Skills) Performs primariliy routine technical assignments using standard methods and sequences. Performs routine set-up, testing, repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of all area specific equipment, materials, systems, and/or product. Makes adjustments, modifications, and replacements as directed under supervision.
    (Planning/Organization) Completes all tasks in line with defined laboratory schedules as directed by their supervisor.
    (Decision Making/Impact) Solves basic problems of limited scope and complexity requiring basic interpretation of defined procedures and practices. Maintains confidentiality in handling sensitive information or documents.
    (Supervision Received) General supervision. Receives detailed supervision and general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions and supervision on any new assignments.
