Background

EirGrid holds licences as the independent electricity Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Market Operator (MO) in the wholesale trading system in Ireland, and is the owner of the System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI Ltd),  the licensed TSO and market operator in Northern Ireland. The Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) is part of the EirGrid Group, and operates the Single Electricity Market on the island of Ireland. SEMO also operates the Guarantee of Origin tracking scheme for the Republic of Ireland.

Market Operations Overview

Market Operations is the largest business division within SEMO and is spread over two offices in Dublin and Belfast.  The market operations team is responsible for the day to day operation of the market.  A position now exist for a Controller within the Dublin team.  Some travel will be required between the two offices. 

The complete operational process from bid to bank incorporates seven broad functional areas.  These are market registration, pricing and scheduling, settlement, credit assessment, funds transfer and green certificate customer services and fuel disclosure administration.  Each area has specific responsibilities for tasks that have to be completed to ensure compliance with the Trading and Settlement Code. 

  • Market Registration manages the process of a trading participant joining the market from initial registration as a party to the SEM up to activation of the trading unit in the daily schedules
  • Pricing and Scheduling is concerned with taking in participant bid data and producing market schedules  There are 3 schedules run each day for:
    • forecasting the schedule day ahead
    • estimating with more accurate data yesterdays schedule and
    • producing the final settlement data for 4 days ago
  • Settlement  produces daily settlement reports, weekly invoices and monthly capacity statements.  
  • Credit Assessment determines the level of collateral participants require.  These will be large financial sums and can change on a daily basis.  
  • Funds Transfer electronically ensures that all the relevant, settlement, capacity and collateral funds transfer occur in a timely manner.  
  • Green Cert and Fuel Disclosure Administration registers participants in the scheme, issues green certificates and tracks their assignment for Fuel Mix Disclosure calculation.
  • Customer Service manage customer interactions, deal with wide ranging customer queries, and co-ordinate and deliver training for market participants.
