To effectively manage the assigned department ensuring quality and commercial objectives are met. As part of the management team to deputise for the Director of Nursing in her absence as required.




Management of Care


To manage the care and allied services effectively ensuring a “best practice” in Care of Older Persons environment and to utilise and update, on an ongoing basis, professional knowledge to ensure excellent quality and creativity in the delivery of care services


To manage, supervise and support the care team within the assigned department.


To ensure compliance with The Marlay policies and procedures.


To ensure that care documentation is of a high standard at all times.


To ensure that management of medication within the home is compliant with An Bord Altranis regulations, Nursing Home regulations and the HIQA Standards.


To conduct audits of services within the home as directed by DON.



To ensure that the the assigned department meets with all the  statutory and regulatory requirements


Budget/ finance

To work within the budget set by Senior Management, ensuring appropriate cost controls are in place while maintaining The Marlay quality standards.


To take part in monthly management meetings on the Home’s performance and take appropriate action to address issued identified therein.


Human resources


To assist in the recruitment process for care staff  to facilitate excellent client care.


To ensure that the Home’s recruitment procedures are adhered to at all times.


To ensure that Care staff receive formal supervision and appraisal in keeping with Home’s policy and to keep records of same.


To assist the Director of Nursing in  managing  staff disciplinary and grievance procedures.



To communicate with all staff, residents and visitors to the Home in a courteous and professional manner reflecting positively on The Marlay.


To ensure all reports and information requested internally, are prepared and delivered on time.


To attend internal company meetings and represent The Marlay when attending external meetings.


Training and Development


Within the assigned unit, to lead, direct and motivate staff and ensure agreed objectives are met and to provide guidance / coaching to help staff improve their performance where appropriate


To educate and focus staff on The Marlay ethos / philosophy of care ensuring the needs and wishes of the clients and their families are prioritised appropriately.


To ensure staff competence by facilitating staff to assess their training needs and to accommodate these needs as required.


To ensure that staff training records are up-to-date.


Health and Safety

To manage the dept. appropriately to ensure resident’s safety and comfort and to ensure all equipment / furnishings are appropriate to the resident’s needs.


To ensure staff and resident safety by facilitating training of staff for emergency situations.




To take part in marketing activities e.g Open Days, Parties and Concerts


To act in the best interest of The Marlay at all times.





Each candidate must: 


Must be on the live register of An Bord Altranais. 

Have 5 years post registration experience  

Have evidence of managerial experience  

Have 3 years experience in Care of Older Adults
