Nature of the Post:
This is a fixed purpose contract which will run for 5 years from the commencement date of employment until the end of the fixed purpose or on an earlier date if the funding for this post comes to an end.

The provisions of the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992 to 2006 and any subsequent Acts replacing or amending these Acts and any orders and regulations made under these Acts will apply.

The Role:
The Centre for Research in Engineering and Surface Technology (CREST) is the only dedicated surface coatings laboratory in Ireland having a history of over sixty years of commercial coating experience operating within a certified ISO 9001 Quality Management System. The Centre delivers commercial fee-earning consultancy work in its role as the national competence Centre in surface treatments, paints and coatings. The Centre has secured over €5.3m in funding since 2004 (comprising direct industry funding and funding through Enterprise Ireland, including substantial funding through the Applied Research Enhancement Programme) as well as earning over €1.2m in consultancy fees during this period. It has transferred sixteen licenses to date, accounted for 10% of all national licensing from the third level sector in 2011, and was the only Irish research group invited to exhibit at the first EU Innovation Convention in December 2011.

CREST undertakes a significant level of collaborative projects with industry resulting in the Licenses, IP generation, Prototypes and Project reporting. The Centre also has a strong portfolio of academic outputs including peer publications, research training and education (Ph.D/M.Phil./M.Sc).

CREST is located within the School of Chemical & Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Sciences and Health, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). It is strongly aligned with the Focas Institute and the Environmental Health Sciences Institute (EHSI) at DIT, both of which receive significant national and international competitive funding. CREST has a strong portfolio of working closely with other research centres and industrial organisations, nationally and internationally.

DIT is seeking to appoint a Manager who will be responsible for the promotion of CREST to industry and who will actively consult with the Centres industrial partners to develop an Industry Engagement Strategy that will allow CREST to generate a strong pipeline of new projects that delivers for the Centre’s targeted industry base. The role will also involve the operation and management of all aspects of CREST’s consultancy work, industry and external body funded research and collaborations in addition to the exploitation of research results and commercialization activities for the benefit of the Centre’s industrial partners.
The continued effective and timely delivery of both technical and financial reports is essential. Early and continuous engagement with commercial parties to source potential routes to commercialisation of all projects is a requirement. Protection of CRESTs IPR and confidentiality will be paramount at all times.

The effective monitoring of job quotations and the timely delivery of technically robust consultancy reports, client management and problem-solving under pressure are particularly important skill-sets required by the appointee. Due to the unique nature of the consultancy work, the adoption of best practise will require continued internal and external auditing. S/he will also have responsibility for the delivery of industry-funded research projects, for example Innovation Partnerships funded through Enterprise Ireland and projects fully-funded by external clients. The Manager will be responsible for the effective operation of CREST within the Health and Safety procedures of the Institute. The Manager will be responsible for relevant marketing initiatives to promote the work of CREST and enhance the profile of the Institute, by means of CREST’s website, the submission of articles to the press and attendance at industry-focused seminars and events. A targeted campaign of engagement with industry organisations, collaborative networks, local regional development authorities and professional associations such as IBEC, CIF, the RIAI and the IEI will be required.

The successful candidate will be expected to also have a track record in high quality academic and/or commercial oriented research; significant project management experience and strong management skills and ability. S/he will have taken an active part in relevant Profess.....
