My Client are looking to hire an Automation Engineer for their manufacturing site


Electrical and Automation Engineer


Aim and purpose of this position:

This role encompasses 2 key aspects:

1.     To provide expertise on all electrical and control (SCADA and PLC) systems, and problem solving/fault finding of electrical systems & equipment throughout the site to secure the continuous operation of factory.

2.     To successfully manage and complete projects that result in steady improvement of plant conditions (i.e. in Health & Safety, production efficiency, reduced operational costs, increased equipment lifetime etc.)



1.1 Functional and Operational task:

Health and Safety

  • Implement and promote best practice Health & Safety standards and practices
  • Ensure that all company safety procedures are correctly implemented eg isolation permits, excavation permits risk assessments etc
  • Ensure that correct personal use of PPE is adhered to
  • Report all safety issues/concerns promptly to superiors
  • Prioritise Health & Safety projects around the site
  • Familiarity with national wiring regulations and coordinating with the EHS manager on the implementation of best practice electrical safety policies

Problem Solving / Fault Finding

  • Ensuring that all PLC programmes are maintained and secured to be safe and deliver efficient plant operation
  • Problem solving and fault finding with the SCADA distributed control system, PLC configuration and programming (CTI, TI, Siemens, Mitsubishi)
  • Problem solving and fault finding with MV/LV AC and LC DC switchgear and distribution systems.


  • Designing, programming and configuring PLC systems to best practice of safe and efficient plant operation
  • Design, installation, commissioning & supervision of electrical CAPEX projects
  • Design, installation, commissioning & supervision of small – medium electrical projects
  • Identify and develop opportunities for new technologies/automation etc
  • Introduction and validation of new equipment & processes


  • Ensure that all electrical systems are maintained in good and safe condition
  • Management of preventative maintenance plan on electrical equipment and systems where possible, including thermography, oil analysis etc
  • Process/Equipment troubleshooting & failure analysis
  • Deliver innovative technical solutions to the plant

Energy Management

  • Responsible for energy management, metering and cost saving initiatives


  • Coordination of process control systems network design, installation, configuration and commissioning
  • Coordination of process control, instrumentation configuration, calibration and installation. Ensuring ISO compliance of instrumentation
  • Liaising with ESB for MV switchgear disconnection/reconnection

Cost Management

  • Always target the best deal for PPL when ordering services/partsetc
  • Triple price all purchase orders > €5000



1.2 Control and Coordination Tasks:

Fitters & Electricians

  • Liaise directly with fitters & electricians who are completing particular tasks/jobs for them

Production Personnel

  • Liaise with process & production personnel in relation to their issues and concerns regarding plant operation and control


  • Ensure that the PPL contractor procedure is adhered to for all contractors they organize to come on site to complete particular tasks
  • Supervise contractors that have been assigned a specific task by them



Additional Information

The position of electrical and automation engineer requires flexibility and availability as demanded by the needs of a continuous plant and process. You will be part of an on-call system providing assistance to electrical technicians and as a result, after-hours and weekend interaction with the plant will be a routine aspect of the job.

An electrical and automation engineer must be a good team player and be analytically minded in linking financial performance to operational efficiency and be capable of meeting ever tightening group deadlines and continuous improvements.

As part of the engineering and maintenance team you will be required to be flexible and adaptable, to meet the varying needs of the business.


Tasks and responsibilities

Must Have:

  • 5 years relevant engineering experience in a heavy industrial environment
  • Honors degree in electrical/automation engineering or equivalent
  • Fault diagnosis & solving experience
  • Project management experience
  • PLC programming experience
  • MS – Office, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Project
  • Proficient with AutoCAD
  • Fluent in English
