I work in the rapidly expanding Irish IT sector as a Senior Software Developer with Version 1, a market leader in IT services in the UK and Ireland.
I work on the database side of the customer’s applications. I am specialised in Oracle databases and on a daily basis I implement projects and developments including coding, testing, configuring, bug fixing, handling change requests and many other activities in order to deliver value to the customers I work with.
What I studied in my country is equivalent to the Irish NFQ Level 6 Higher Certificate, but I have complemented this with several relevant IT certifications achieved during the more than 10 years I have been working in the software industry.
No day is the same, there’s always something different to do.
Apart from a very analytical mind, people skills definitely. There are usually quite a few meetings with different people and areas on a regular day, so one needs to be able to deal with people all the time.

"Version 1 is an IT services consulting company which was formed in 1996. We've grown to 600 people now and our mission is to prove the value of IT to our clients' businesses. So, we've been doing it for 18 years now and we are quite good at it at this stage."
"You'll find us across many of your everyday activities. Be it taxing your motor car, Version 1 is behind that system. Many of the utility bills you might get Version 1 produced them and supported the customers in that. Your property tax bill, Version 1 is very much to the fore of those systems in Revenue. So, you will find us inside many of the things you do everyday."
"Version 1 is a fast growing company, we have a history of that. Last year we grew by 120 people and in 2015 we will grow by another 100 people. We are positioned right across the board. We are a broad IT services company, so we don't specialise in any one technology so it coud be Java, Oracle or Microsoft we hire people right across the stack there. We hire people into developer roles, we hire people into infrastructure and database so again we support our clients in many of their needs. We are looking for people from graduate to senior level. Last year we hired 30 graduates, this year we are going to hire 40 graduates so our graduate programme is a huge part of what we do."

"I think it's well known in the industry that there is a global skills shortage so it can be quite challenging to hire the people you need, particularly when you are hiring large numbers like Version 1 does. However, being an IT services and consulting company with such a broad technology offering, it's probably a little bit easier for us because people know this is where they will get the latest technologies, this is where they can upskill and also a career in consulting is probably the best career a person in IT can start with or move into because you do get to interface with customers and you get to see many different customer systems, many different business domains and learn many different technologies so we probably find it a little bit easier than others but it is challenging out there.
"I think the biggest tip I'd have for people is not to take a short term view, there is a supply and demand issue at the moment. Some commentators believe that, many in four years time, that will have balanced out as the supply increases so I'd say to people we are all tipped to be working until we are 70 so I'd encourage people to think a little bit longer and not just take the job with the highest pay or whatever. So, to upskill people need to look at rounding their skills out from just pure technology into understanding what value technology adds and then to be able to influnce that whether they are working in house or in a consultancy. By rounding out I mean customer management, business domain experience, broad technology so not just focusing on one deep technology and understanding the impact of what they do in IT to deliever what the customer needs."

"One of the things that I am personally responsible for is our capability structure. We've divided the whole organisation into seven capabilities, which is a structure that accommodates people of different disciplines. So, for example, we'd have a capability devoted to business transformation and change. A capability devoted to Business Intelligence, a capability devoted to our Microsoft platform and another to our oracle offerings. It's a place where people's career plans or prioritised, where we look after training and certification, where we create a community of learning between professionals in the same discipline so that we can take the best of what we do from our cumulative experience and build that into improvements and service improvements for our customers. My name is Raymond Mulligan. I am a technical architect with Version 1, I;ve been working here for 7 years.Our customer was a semi state organisation, they had thousands of suppliers with multiple infrastrutures, multiple architectures so our challenge was to get that into one system.
They wanted to avail of the cloud so our challenge was to assure them that the cloud solution was the right way to go, was going to be performant, secure and scalable.
We decided to use ASP net MVC5 with a code first approach, allowing us to be much more agile and respond to the customer's needs.
We kept our controllers as lightweight as possible so that we could use either web API or MVC controllers to surface the information through either browsers or tablets, phones or web services.
By using microsoft azure we had a really flexible technology platform and we were able to hit the customer service level requirements.
For me as architect on the project I was very happy with the outcome. The customer gave us a really tough challenge and we delievered to a really high standard.
One of the great things about working for Version 1 is their focus on people development. It's allowed me to progress all the way from a senior developer to a lead developer through to an architect, now I am a microsoft certified professional.
The fact that Version 1 was voted number 3 in the Great Places to Work in Ireland is testiment to this focus on people development.
