What's it like to work with Prometric?

Inside Story: Prometric

Reading Time: 3 minutes

IT company Prometric is a trusted test development and delivery provider to more than 400 organisations around the world.

The Dundalk based company is expanding and is currently recruiting for a number of IT roles.

We spoke to Stuart Callan, who is a junior software engineer with Prometric. He told us more about his job and what Prometric can offer ambitious IT professionals.

Describe your typical working day?

A typical working day does not consist of coding from start to finish. Daily stand-ups take place where we discuss what we are working on, any blocking issues in our projects we currently have or have overcome in the past day and what the next steps are that we have decided to take.

We also are in contact with users across the business functions when we are working with them to deliver new projects. No two projects are the same so there is an array of technologies we get to learn about and develop in.

What qualifications do you have and what is your previous work experience?

I’ve got a B.Sc.(Hons) in Computing and some work placement experience

What is the best thing about your job?

The fact that people are so willing to share their knowledge. Being a recent graduate and with this being my first real job I was afraid it would take me a while to settle in and get up to speed with things. But everyone made me feel welcome and the team is great!

There is constant collaboration across the office and regions the company is located in and nobody is afraid to give a helping hand when needed. One of my favourite things about working with the company is that it supports our professional development through various means including, providing memberships to online training services such as Pluralsight and MSDN, running a mentor program where you can be paired up with a senior mentor from across the global business, in house training, and other development programs.

And the biggest challenge?

The company strives for perfection which is definitely not a negative point. Because the work we do can literally change a person’s life through allowing them to receive certification in their field of choice it is of huge importance that anything we do is done to the highest standard. The company’s Vision Mission and Values reflect this by placing our candidates and customers at the top of the pyramid.

What is it like to live in Dundalk?

Dundalk is a vibrant town with lots to do. For those interested in sports there is nearly every type of sports club one could imagine, including soccer, GAA, rugby, athletics and many more. The location of the town and the proximity of the motorway means you are only an hour away from Dublin and Belfast which means shopping trips aren’t a big undertaking.

The scenic coastal village of Blackrock is within a five minute drive of the Dundalk office meaning lunch at the beach is a possibility during the summer! There is a great view of the Cooley Mountains and Dundalk Bay from the office and we get to enjoy the sight of four seasons in one day regularly.

The town has an active nightlife with the town centre being home to many traditional pubs as well as restaurants and nightclubs.

What advice would you give someone considering applying for a job with Prometric?

Prepare well for the interview. Spend a while learning about what Prometric does and have a read through the company’s Vision Mission and Values to get a sense of how the company works. For people applying for development jobs it would be wise to study technical questions and projects you have worked on previously. Be positive and be yourself.
