If you’d like to work with managers who are interested in your development, and in an organisation that gives you ample opportunities to learn from an incredible and experienced team of people then Bank of Ireland is the place for you.

Bank of Ireland is currently recruiting for a Senior Pensions Administrator.

To find out more about the job and about working with Bank of Ireland we spoke to Mark Hanan who is currently a Senior Group Pensions Administrator within Group HR. He told us more about career opportunities available with Bank of Ireland.

What is your job?

I`m a Senior Group Pensions Administrator within Group HR in Bank of Ireland. We administer many of the Bank of Ireland Group’s staff pension schemes on behalf of the Trustees.

What qualifications do you have?

I received a certificate in Business Studies from DIT prior to starting my career in pensions. I have since attained the QFA and RPA designations from the LIA. Currently, with the support of the bank, I am undertaking the Diploma in Pensions Management and Policy through the IIPM at National College of Ireland.

What is your previous work experience?

Fresh out of college, I started in Aviva working in various areas of the pensions department from processing new business applications to monitoring a portfolio of group pension schemes. After 10 years, I moved to Cornmarket Group Financial Services where I provided Life & Investment support to public servants on their pensions, savings and protection needs. Following 4 years there, I decided to make the switch to Bank of Ireland.

What attracted you to the role?

Having previously been interested in a number of similar roles, the chance to join a large organisation such as Bank of Ireland, and to further my pensions experience by working on the largest private defined benefit scheme in Ireland, was a big draw for me. Even though the role was initially on a 12-month temporary contract, I felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up. I have since been made permanent in my position so it has definitely paid off for me so far.

What is the best thing about your job?

The people! My colleagues, in my team and other departments, are very friendly, helpful and supportive which makes it easier when facing any challenges that may pop up! There is a great work/life balance encouraged throughout the company through various initiatives such as charity events and ‘Be At Your Best’ which gets people involved in social activities both in work and outside of the working day.

And the biggest challenge?

Learning about the various schemes within the bank, whether DB or DC, and applying my previous pensions experience to these schemes has been challenging but rewarding. Also, adapting to the ongoing changes in the pensions industry such as the pension levy, revaluation orders and the upcoming IORPS II Directive in 2019 ensures everyone is kept on their toes!

What other skills do you need in your job?

My day to day job requires interacting with bank employees, pensioners and different stakeholders and teams, so interpersonal and clear communication skills are essential. The ability to problem solve, multitask, be organised and attention to detail are important. A good head for figures and an advanced knowledge of excel would also help with the various calculations carried out on a daily basis.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

As a relatively new employee to the bank, I expect to have gained more experience and have a greater understanding of the pension schemes, and of the bank as a whole. I hope to earn more responsibility within my area and continue to progress my education with the support of the bank.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in your profession?

Be proactive with your education and get your pension qualifications. The industry is always changing so you need to keep up to date. A lot of companies, like Bank of Ireland, encourage continuous learning and are very supportive in this area.

What advice would you give someone considering applying for a job with Bank of Ireland?

Go for it! As I’ve mentioned above, working with Bank of Ireland has been an important decision in my career to date. They are an organisation that invests in their people, has a positive can-do attitude and offers its employee’s many opportunities to progress within the company.
