Ireland, Friday July 5th 2013: The number of jobs advertised online has increased by 7 per cent in the second quarter according to the IrishJobs.ie Jobs Index for Q2 2013.

Sectors recording increases in jobs advertised online include: Tourism, up 15 per cent; Accountancy & Finance, up 18 per cent; Manufacturing, up 15 per cent; Legal, up 44 per cent; Banking, up 15 per cent; Engineering, up 20 per cent; Beauty and Leisure, up 28 per cent; and Transport which rose by 18 per cent.

Dr Stephen Kinsella, University of Limerick and author of the report comments: “The news is remarkably good with total jobs advertised up by 7 per cent quarterly. Key sectors such as Tourism, Manufacturing, Engineering, Finance, Legal and Transport are recording increases. Although the outlook domestically is challenging, with personal consumption down 3 per cent and investment down 8 per cent, employers in Ireland are looking to hire. Tourist numbers to Ireland which grew substantially between March and May, in addition to improvements in the Manufacturing sector, support the upward trend we are seeing in key sectors in the Jobs Index.”

Orla Moran, General Manager, IrishJobs.ie comments: “The figures reported in our Jobs Index for the second quarter are heartening, reflecting the confidence of employers hiring across Ireland in the past three months. Sales, IT and Finance account for the bulk of job availability with Tourism and Manufacturing performing strongly. Customer Services and Languages is the highlight sector in Cork while in Limerick there are wins for Engineering and Utilities. The Jobs Index is supported by the latest business sentiment survey from KBC Bank Ireland and Chartered Accountants Ireland, also pointing to a recovery in the jobs market and hiring activity.”

Regional trends – sectors hiring and where

Comparing three cities: Dublin, Cork and Limerick, what job categories were strong in the last quarter? Regional variations are evident with sectors like Science, Pharmaceutical and Food big in Cork but less so in Dublin; and Banking and Finance represented in Dublin but much less so in Cork or Limerick. The clear winner in Customer Services and Languages is Cork while Limerick wins for Engineering and Utilities.

Waterford recorded the largest percentage increase in jobs advertised during Q2 2013 while Galway and Cork performed strongly. In these regions the main types of jobs advertised were IT, Tourism and Production and Manufacturing. Beauty, Leisure and Sport were also strongly performing categories.

Compared with the Jobs Index Quarter Q2 2009, almost every sector has recorded an increase in jobs advertised with the exceptions of Retailing (-17%), Construction (-149%), Security (-36%) and Publishing (-14%).

Dr Kinsella concludes: “In studying the Irish economy, experience teaches us not to rely on single datapoints to consider the future – things are volatile, the outlook for the international economy is uncertain. The IrishJobs.ie report provides a small piece of good news. We look forward to seeing whether this upward trend continues into the third quarter.”

The report looks at all corporate jobs advertised on IrishJobs.ie and Jobs.ie from 01/04/13 to 30/06/13.

Stephen Kinsella is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Limerick. He is the author of Ireland in 2050: How we will be Living and Understanding Ireland’s Economic Crisis: Prospects for Recovery. His research spans the area of computable economics, health economics, and experimental economics.

Quarter 2, 2009 is the reference month for the IrishJobs.ie Jobs Index.
