How do you stay motivated during a long job hunt?
It’s very easy to get de-motivated and lie around. Here’s a few ways to prevent this and no better way than getting a routine going.
a) Get out of bed same time every day -
b) Do something to get your energy levels going – walk – swim – eat
c) Hit the desk at the same time every day
Create a to do list
You should treat your job hunt like a job in itself.
a) review who has new jobs posted, check out IrishJobs.ie
b) who do you need to follow up with after sending them a CV or having gone for an interview. Create a spreadsheet and track them.
c) if not successful find out why not and learn from your mistakes.
d) what else are you using to get your profile out there
• social media
• Talk to your network, let everyone know you are looking for a job not just business contacts but friends and family as well
• Contribute to online forums in your sector, attend events or seminars.
Take regular breaks
Pace yourself, you need to take regular breaks to revive yourself.
a) We all have different concentration periods, most people are n’t great after 90minutes
b) Breaks should include a stretch, a walk or some fresh air.
c) Get your serotonin going, try to include regular exercise in your routine it will give you the feel good factor you need to keep you going.
If you are at home on your own trying to job search it is vital to get out and hook up with positive people – too much time on your own and make you negative. If going out for coffee or lunch is too pricey invite people to your house or meet up for a walk. You should also try to volunteer to keep your hand in and stay current – better to do 3 days a week and stay up to speed than stay at home doing nothing.
Give yourself a pat on the back for what you have achieved – it may just be small steps you have achieved like finishing your to do list or something big like getting an interview or whatever but recognise your achievements along the way in your job hunt.
