Top 5 CV Tips

1. Sell

Sell your achievements and skills. Remember your  CV is not your life story it is your sales brochure and you are selling your skills and experience to a potential employer. It is estimated that it takes 20 seconds to scan a CV so you need to make sure your “selling points” ie your skills and experience can be seen at a glance.

2. Connect

To know exactly which skills and experience you need to emphasis carefully read the job description, take it apart line by line and meticulously match your skills to the job requirements. You want to be sure you connect as many of the recruiters requirements to your own skills and experience. The more connections you make the more likely you are to get called to an interview.

3. Measure

When talking about your skills and experience put them in a format which is easily understood and measurable. For example rather than say you organised a rota which increased productivity, say you organised a rota which increased productivity by 10% saving your company €5,000 per year. It’s a simple but effective way to make your achievements stand out.

4. Profile

You can guarantee the one part of your CV that will be read is your profile. A well written and powerful profile should make the recruiter want to read all of your CV. Use it to provide a focused and informative snapshot of your experience and a sense of your skills and make it relevant to the job you are applying for.

5. Format

If you make it difficult for a recruiter to read your CV then they won’t.  Your CV should be laid out so it’s easy to access with bullet points, fonts and no longer than two A4 pages. Check your grammar and check your spelling too.
