MSD Ireland (Ballydine) was established in 1976 near Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, where the operation now employs more than 420 people. In recent years, the plant has expanded its business of producing active pharmaceutical ingredients for use by Merck & Co., Inc. subsidiaries throughout the world to include the development of late stage clinical API. A new Formulation R&D and Manufacturing Facility has been recently built on the existing site to support Merck's initiative to bring new medicines to market more effectively. The facility will develop innovative methods for the formulation of new products from pilot to commercial scale and supply tablets and capsules for late stage clinical trials, launch and early stage supply.
MSD Ireland (Carlow) is the latest Company facility to be built in Ireland. Carlow is our first stand-alone human vaccine project. Located on the edge of the town, it’s a state of the art, 200,000 sq ft biologics operation which cost €220 million. Operations are due to start in early 2011, from which point we’ll begin to formulate and fill vaccines and biologic products which could ultimately be used by millions of people across the world.
