Recruitment
Advertising
If you advertise a post, it is important to make it clear that you can provide the information in accessible formats.
It is also beneficial to make it clear that you welcome applications from people with disabilities, for example by simply stating in the advert "we welcome applications from people with disabilities".
Recruitment Advertising Tips
The usual places for advertising vacancies may not reach people with disabilities. They are more likely to see an advert if you do the following:
- Place the job with your local supported employment office. The IASE will put you in contact with a Job Coach from the local Supported Employment agency
- Send the vacancy to local education and training providers.
- Place the advert with local disability organisations such as www.iase.ie and www.nda.ie. Disability Awareness training is available through www.NCBI.ie, www.IWA.ie and information on Disability Awareness training grants can be found on www.citizensinformation.ie.
- Post a job on IrishJobs.ie using the advice given in this guide.
Sample reasonable accommodations:
For example replace "Must be able to touch type at 80 wpm" with "Must be able to produce accurate documents using the word processing package i.e., Microsoft Word
For example some other people you employ may have no experience working with people with a disability and might be anxious. Disability awareness training can make a difference to people's attitudes and enable employers to create an environment which encourages creativity and commitment.
