You’re right, jobs are scarce in that field right now. Many QS’s I know have gone overseas to get work, so that’s one option – but nearer home, you could use your project management skills within an organization, to help them further new processes, or initiatives – there is some contract work right now around that area.
Alternatively, you could focus on any materials skills you have, and look at causal working in materials producers (e.g. stone, wood, mouldings etc)or indeed a DIY retail store. People are still developing their homes, they’re just finding cheaper ways to do it.
Another option could be to offer your services to people looking to upgrade their homes and sell a service locating materials, finding tradesmen to do it efficiently and getting the job completed for them. You could offer this service locally and see what uptake comes long.
If you’re interested in further study, it would be good to do something related to your QS and work experience so far, so building on this. To decide, you’ll need to think what you’d really like to be doing in the future, and then find a way that study will help you achieve this – there are wide horizons for you.
